Environmental Studies

UConn’s Environmental Studies program explores environmental issues through an interdisciplinary lens that connects policy, society, sustainability, and the natural world. Students in this cross-college program examine how environmental decisions affect communities, economies, and ecosystems while developing skills in communication, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving. With flexible coursework and experiential learning opportunities, the program prepares students for careers in sustainability, advocacy, public policy, education, nonprofit leadership, and community engagement.

Advising is a cornerstone of the UConn experience. In the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources, our students benefit from a close, collaborative community where each student works closely with a faculty advisor in their major. Ratcliffe Hicks students pursuing the two-year degree are encouraged to connect with advisors in CAHNR’s Office of Academic Programs for tailored support and academic planning.

Student projects in Environmental Sciences give students the opportunity to investigate complex environmental challenges through fieldwork, laboratory research, and data analysis. Students may study water quality, ecosystem dynamics, climate impacts, environmental chemistry, or ecological processes while working alongside faculty mentors. These experiences build strong scientific and analytical skills while contributing to research that advances environmental understanding and solutions.
