How to Apply to our Graduate Program
The Department of Natural Resources and the Environment welcomes applicants interested in advancing environmental research, sustainability, conservation, and natural resource management through graduate study at UConn. Qualified students with a BS or BA degree (or equivalent) may apply to master’s and doctoral programs aligned with the department’s areas of expertise.
Application Process and Timeline
Identify a Major Advisor
Prospective students should contact faculty directly to discuss their research programs and potential opportunities to join their teams. Faculty may request additional information or schedule an interview to determine mutual research interests and program fit. Please note that a confirmed Major Advisor prior to application is required for admission. NRE graduate programs are centered on independent research conducted under faculty mentorship. Faculty members are not obligated to accept new graduate students.
Apply to the UConn Graduate School
Prospective students with an identified Major Advisor should apply for graduate study in the UConn Department of Natural Resources and the Environment via the Graduate School’s online application. Include the name of your Major Advisor on the application form.
Additional Department Requirements
- Three letters of recommendation from previous mentors, instructors, or direct supervisors. Letters from academics are preferred.
- Advisor’s agreement letter.
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score. This requirement may be waived if the following criteria are met:
- GPA above 3.2
- Excellent letters of recommendation
- Formal request by NRE Major Advisor to NRE Admissions Committee
- NRE Admissions Committee votes to waive the GRE requirement based on the above
