Many Resources, One Environment
The Department of Natural Resources and the Environment (NRE) prepares students to address complex environmental challenges through science, policy, conservation, and community engagement. Students gain hands-on experience studying ecosystems, wildlife, climate resilience, sustainability, environmental economics, and natural resource management while building skills for impactful careers across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Through innovative research and engagement across Connecticut and beyond, the department advances solutions that support healthy environments, resilient communities, and sustainable natural systems.

Through fieldwork, applied research, internships, and experiential learning opportunities, students develop the scientific, analytical, and leadership skills needed to shape the future of environmental stewardship and sustainability.
Research with Reach
Faculty and students conduct interdisciplinary research focused on natural resource conservation, climate adaptation, environmental policy, biodiversity, ecosystem health, sustainable communities, and human-environment interactions. This work helps inform decision-making, strengthen environmental resilience, and address emerging challenges facing Connecticut and the world.
Extension and Outreach
Through UConn Extension and partnerships across the state, the department connects research and education with communities, organizations, agencies, and industries working to protect and manage our natural resources.
